This workshop will focus on the effectiveness of interventions for people with mental health disorders. The procedure to implement routine outcome measurement will be presented and group work will facilitate discussions around barriers and facilitators to routine outcome measurement.

The following will be included in this interactive workshop:

  • The state of Mental Health Care in SA, including Mental Health Care Policy Document and research findings;
  • Our ethical responsibility to deliver services;
  • Routine Outcome Measurement:
    • What is it and why we need it (benefits)
    • Challenges
  • Procedure for implementing routine outcome measurement
    • Steps in the process
    • Principles to consider
    • Different outcome measurements available to OTs in mental health and other settings;
  • Group work: Facilitators and barriers of routine outcome measurement in own setting; and
  • Feedback on plans, critical review and problem solving and formulation of action plans per setting.

About the presenter:

Education: Daleen was awarded a MArb in 2001, following 18 years of study in OT and Vocational Rehabilitation. She also holds a Diploma in Higher Education and Training Practice (2002) and a PhD (2011) from Pretoria.

Work experience: Daleen has held numerous positions in the OT field over the last 30 years. At present, she is a senior lecturer in Occupational Therapy at WITS & an associate professor, where she coordinates the OT PhD programme and holds the position of Chairperson of the Psychiatric Team in the OT department.

Achievements: Daleen has presented at a number of international and national conferences, and currently holds the position of Chairperson of the Psychiatric Occupational Therapy Group (POTS). In addition, she is a member of the World federation of OTS (WFOT) and currently part of the team that advises the WHO on the newly developed intervention codes for rehabilitation (ICHI). She is also a reviewer of articles for the SAJOT, the BJOT and OTI.
