Orientation and approach
“Without correct thought, there cannot be correct action.”
My 25 years of experience as a therapist with a doctorate in creative thinking, has resulted in a flexible, open and solution oriented style. Although I am well versed in a wide range of therapeutic approaches, I have a strong leaning towards cognitive therapy.
This approach views the feelings we have, decisions we make and actions we take as the direct consequence of the way we think - first the thought, then the feeling, decision or action. If we become aware of how we think and cultivate healthy ways of thinking, solutions to every problem we might experience, will be a natural consequence.
In recent years, neuroscientists made revolutionary breakthroughs in understanding how the brain works. This confirms the importance of learning to think about our thinking. The most important discovery neuroscientists made was neuroplasticity; “neuro” for brain cell and “plasticity” for changeable and malleable.
The essence of neuroplasticity is that the brain can change at any age. It is possible to overcome mental difficulties like depression, ADD or OCD and even increase our intelligence and delay the ageing process! Prior to this discovery, the general viewpoint about how the brain works, was that after childhood, the only changes that take place is when it starts to decline through the ageing process. Fortunately, this has been proven wrong!
Neuroscientists proved that our experiences and thoughts wire our brain cells to form neural pathways. These result in thinking, feeling and behavioral habits. Like all habits, some of them work to our advantage and others against. The beauty of neuroplasticity is that choosing different experiences and thoughts can literally rewire and change the brain to form any new productive habit we might desire. Neuroplasticity gives hope and encouragement that we can recreate every aspect of our lives by changing how we think.
During therapy or life coaching, clients invariably also pick up on “rewiring” skills in applying creative and critical thinking in a problem solving process. Without many exceptions, discovering how to use these skills in everyday situations, empower clients, built confidence and spontaneously opened up new areas towards personal mastery.
From a personal perspective, I like to see myself as a coach to stretch the mind of a particular client rather than the proverbial “shrink.” The client and I are learners and problem solvers together. I have lived through many personal difficulties clients may experience myself and this perhaps enables me to understand their problems and challenges on a deeper level.
